- DER ROSENKAVALIER (1926), Dir. by Robert Wiene (of CABINET OF CALIGARI fame), screenplay by Hugo von Hofmannsthal from his original libretto; 15 years after he wrote the opera, Richard Strauss embarked on a major re-arrangement and opening up, to include spectacular outdoor marching scenes, adding the Marschallin's husband and music that were not in the opera; this is the same Berndt Heller restoration, again minus the final reel, that was performed Dec 19, 1993, at Avery Fisher Hall, New York, by the American Symphony Orchestra led by Leon Botstein; there is no singing --the cast includes Michael Bohnen, one of the foremost Baron Ochses of the day, and other leading stars of European film, such as Jacques Catelain, a man, for a change, playing Octavian; Strauss
conducted the premiere in Jan. 1926 in Dresden, with another performance in April at London's Tivoli Theatre, with
selections recorded the following morning (27 mins. of which are
now available on EMI CD 54610-2); it has been reported that
Strauss felt the film should be shown at variable speed to keep up with his music, instead of his trying to synchronize his conducting to the film; performance runs about 2 1/2 hours with intermission. There will be 2 perfs at 2PM and 8PM on Sat Aug 24 at the 2,800 seat Edinburgh Festival Theatre, with a conductor TBA, leading the Scottish National Orchestra; part of the Drambuie Edinburgh Int'l Film Festival, Edinburgh, Scotland (this theatre began showing short films as early as 1896!)

- "Cinecon Society for Cinephiles" showing mostly 35MM silents and early, rare sound films, with a special emphasis on Vitaphone on its 70th anniversary. There will be an exhibit of an actual surviving Vitaphone set-up. There will be accompanists for silents (last year this included Phil Carli, Robert Israel, Jon Mirsalis, Michael Mortilla and, on organ, Bob Vaughn). The event will again be held at the Clarion Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, site of first Academy Awards, across the street from the Chinese Theatre and new Galaxy, and a block from the El Capitan (with at least one film shown there or at the Chinese or at UCLA's Melnitz or Paramount's studio theatre in most years). For more info, write CINECON, Society for Cinephiles, Box 1632, Hollywood, CA 90028. You are urged to call in your reservations directly to Clarion Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA (800) 950-7667 or (213) 466-7000; single or double rooms $82; do this as soon as possible, but no later than 8/4/96.
- ** Just announced 3/15/96, silent or Vitaphone films confirmed so far include: Lois Weber's HYPOCRITES (1914); William S. Hart's THE CAPTIVE GOD (1915); DeMille's JOAN THE WOMAN (1916) with Geraldine Farrar and Wallace Reid; John S. Robertson's THE BRIGHT SHAWL (1923) with Richard Barthelmess, Edward G. Robinson, Mary Astor, William Powell, Dorothy Gish, Jetta Goudal; Josef Von
Sternberg's first sound (Movietone) film THUNDERBOLT (1929), with Fay Wray, George Bancroft, Richard Arlen, Tully Marshall; Michael Curtiz' UNDER A TEXAS MOON (1930), a Vitaphone film in 2-color Technicolor, with Frank Fay, Raquel Torres, Myrna Loy, Noah Beery; LENA RIVERS (1914), UCLA Film Archive's Bob Gitt's new restoration from a 5 reel tinted nitrate print; a collection of Vitaphone shorts, including last year's restoration of Al Jolson's PLANTATION ACT, which preceded THE JAZZ SINGER by a year; and, unseen for 70 years, Tod Browning'a NO WOMAN KNOWS (1921), with Max Davidson (!); --with all of the above to be shown in 35mm.
- ** Just announced 7/15/96: as part of the 70th anniversary of Vitaphone, Cinecon will be showing the UCLA Archive-restored 35MM Vitaphone print of THE BETTER 'OLE (1926), part of the second Vitaphone program to be shown in N.Y. (when you've seen it, like this writer, you may find some interesting comparisons with Powell and Pressburger's masterpiece, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP!). Silents just added include: THE BLACKBIRD (1926), Lon Chaney; WHEN I WAS DEAD (1916), fresh from its Pordenone re-discovery last year, directed by and starring Ernst Lubitsch (his earliest extant film in such a dual role). Chaplin at Cinecon: there will be Chaplin Mutuals in 35MM, selected by David Shepard (in this writer's nearly 30
years of attending the Cinecons he can recall few showings of
Chaplin films --that's perhaps an example of how hard Cinecon programmers work to get films we haven't seen!); and
another, more controversial film, THE CHAPLIN PUZZLE (1995?), written by Joe Adamson, produced, edited and directed by Don McGlynn, with narration by Burgess Meredith --this two part docu and attempted reconstruction of POLICE from the Chaplin compilation of TRIPLE TROUBLE and previously released two reel version of POLICE into a new three reel version, made the news about two years ago (I thought it was made as a video); be sure to read Stan Taffel's lengthy review, filmmaker McGlynn's interview with Bonnie McCourt, and her editorial in the Summer '96 issue of Limelight (vol. 2, no. 3) --a 21 page issue worth reading.
- ** 7/15/96 update on Cinecon guests announced so far: Vanessa Brown, Richard Ney, Stanley Kramer, Ann Rutherford, Virginia O'Brien, Abraham Polonsky and "child star panel" incl Edith Fellows, Sybil Jason, Junior Coughlan and Diana Serra Cary (better known as "Baby Peggy," she'll also appear with a rare screening of her 1925 silent, CAPTAIN JANUARY, and talk about her wonderful book, The Hollywood Posse).
- ** 7/20/96 update: additional silents will incl THE TORRENT (Garbo's first U.S. film); FOR LADIES ONLY (1927), with John Bowers; and there will be a centenary tribute to William Wellman by Lost Films author/Wellman biographer Frank Thompson.
