THE MAN WITH THE MOVIE CAMERA (1929, Soviet silent), Written, directed and edited by Dziga Vertov; Dennis James' Musica Curiosa Ensemble in performance with such instruments as piano, theremin, autoharp, marxophone, flexatone, cello, phonoviolin, percussion and sound effects; like the Alloy Orchestra, which has accompanied the film in Pordenone, Telluride and, in April, at the S.F. Int'l Film Festival, both groups have assembled their scores from Vertov's own notations, but the MCE score utilizes surviving Soviet silent film music materials and scoring and performance techniques in use during the period of the film's original release; so the result is likely to be that MCE's tradition-based silent film music style will be a very different interpretation from that of Alloy, a popular contemporary-music ensemble (using modern film scoring techniques); (Dennis James and his Musica Curiosa Ensemble made their debut at PFA in January with the delightfully satirical Soviet silent, THE HOUSE ON TRUBNAYA SQUARE (1928); (above description adapted from Dennis James' preliminary PFA announcement); Pacific Film Archive, University Art Museum, U.C. Berkeley CA, (510)-642-1412, Spec. admission 7:30

"American Movie Classics (AMC Cable) Presents Its 4th Annual Film Preservation Festival": While the only silent scheduled was THE GOLD RUSH, this year's theme was: "An All-Star Tribute to the American Musical." There were a few early Vitaphone/Movietone films in the collection, such as SUNNY SIDE UP, THE LOVE PARADE, LOVE ME TONIGHT, THE LOTTERY BRIDE; also set were early shorts with Blake and Sissel, and an early short, OFFICE BLUES, with Ginger Rogers; AMC was understandably excited at getting all of the Rogers & Hammerstein film musicals, incl THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and the beautiful UCLA Archive-restored Deanna Durbin Technicolor musical, CAN'T HELP SINGING. There were "unscheduled" segments on what the major U.S. film archives are doing. Proceeds from viewer contributions and video cassette purchases go to The Film Foundation, which passes funds on to 5 major U.S. archives. To support this effort call (800) AMC-3360.
